Keys to Victory - Cruz Azul vs Monterrey

Tonight Cruz Azul will look to use their home field advantage at Estadio Azteca to propel them to the final. They will need more than a raucous crowd to defeat the team from Monterrey. Here are my keys to victory for each team in the rubber match of this series.

Cruz Azul

  • Win the time of possession battle. Cruz Azul has to force the Monterrey’s midfielders to move up and wear them out.

  • Counter off corner and free kicks. Once Corona gets the ball, they need to catch Nico Sanchez out of position and exploit it.

Monterrey

  • Pick up where they left off. They need to continue their work against Elias Hernandez. Cruz Azul has a limited number of creative players outside of Hernandez. If Rayados takes the lead and takes Elias out of the game, Cruz Azul will have a hard time catching up.

  • Continue the defensive midfield effort. Funis Mori is playing well alone up top. Continue to give him the freedom to express himself. Midfield needs to defend and attack as one.
